Frozen Flame

I imagine that in a few days I'll look at this and realize how sophomoric the whole thing is, but what the heck. I get occasional thanks for being level headed in an emotional minefield of abuse by CPS, I guess I can afford an occasional slip.

Ordinarily I avoid USENET "flame wars" as they tend to be a waste of time, bandwidth, and everything. However, I was compelled to respond to this post:

I'm an electronic engineer and physicist. Ask me a question, idiot.
  Steve

Well, with an opening like that, how can an engineer and word abuser pass that up? So I asked him how he could be so clueless! Obviously I shouldn't have done that, and he certainly should not have replied, However, his reply inspired this Web page.

Why are you such an ignorant little xxxx? See, you're short the answers
  to a lot of things.

I use SCO UNIX V every day.

I've seen enough one-sided horror stories to last a lifetime. When you
investigate them they turn into xxxx before your eyes, you find that the
cranks are LYING, that they neglect to tell you GREAT BIG THINGS about
themselves and what they've done to their kids, they especially leave
out what their kids think of them, and et cetera. People who pull this
  xxxx are sick little whiners.

And what makes me more ashamed than anything is that most engineers are
so sexually and socially clueless that they are absolute political
morons who tend to do things with their wives and children that they'd
NEVER xxxxing try with delicate machinery! Unfortunately, unlike myself,
most engineers go into the sciences to get away from the people in their
young lives who abused the xxxx out of them.

Well! So I passed his response to Paula, figuring it was her wifely duty to come to my rescue. Instead, she rummages through our photos looking for support of what engineers do with children and sends me this along with scanned photos:

  baseless speculation

Well you DID take Hannah rock climbing when she was four while I was
studying for law school final. I can hold that over your head.

I can find only two other examples of "doing things with your child you
  wouldn't do with delicate machinery."

"child in use as depth gauge." and "child taken to great height and
exposed to possibility of great downward acceleration." I recall
MIT students have also been involved in measuring things with people.

How about the day you took Hannah to the Pittsburgh zoo and nearly
fed her to a camel? Or let her self-fold while sleeping on a bike ride?
My aunt used to say that her mother told her to marry a homely man
"because they came home at night." She married an engineer as well. I do
recall one night when you didn't come home for hours after I was expecting
you, and I finally called the police. They asked of any places you might
be inclined to stop after work. The only place I could think of was the
new Barnes and Noble in Nashua - first one in the state. I would say that
there is great advantage to having husbands you don't have to worry about
in that arena out of sight.

Other than that I'd tell the guy to stay the hell out of our sex life.

  Unfortunately, unlike myself,

Now THAT I can positively say is not the case with you. Perhaps this man
is projecting his own past onto others? The "unlike myself" portion may
  not be accurate?

Don't forget, you survived being reared by an engineer yourself:

Finally, Paula found this photo somewhere, I've been looking for a place to put it. This is _not_ our daughter!
